Where do I even start?

As our nation deals with the heavy toll of mass shootings, white supremacy, and rising inflation... this writer is finding it difficult not to address all of our concerns.

I think it is about time we talk about the BIGs. The U.S. economy thrives on free-market and capitalistic pursuits, so it is only natural that almost everything we do, use, eat, buy, etc. is owned by those at the top-- the BIGs. Big Pharma, Big Soda, Big Tech, Big Tobacco, Big Media, and the list continues.

And now, current news tells us that a not-so-new conglomerate is at play, we just didn't know it before now. Big Baby... formula?

Yup, I'm talking about the baby formula shortage-- and if you haven't heard about it yet, check out this video by Public Health Expert, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed.

This shortage is not just about recalling baby formula and shutting down a manufacturing plant. No, it's about how one or two companies that essentially dominate the industry can cause a nationwide shortage.

Abbott Laboratories can apologize as much as they want, but their business model is all about control 🤑. Here's the deal, nearly half of baby formula is purchased under WIC, a program for low-income women, infants, and children.

Under a bidding process, states give exclusive production rights to one manufacturer, primarily Abbott Nutrition (who accounts for half of the infant formula produced under WIC). So, when they stop making formula... we have a shortage.

Should we continue to allow big companies to control our markets?

I mean look around! When a few big companies have enough power to dominate markets, it often leads to inequities, profit-over-people ideologies, market inefficiencies, and a lack of competition for small businesses.

If you've ever taken an Economics or Policy course you know that when the market is failing to do what it needs to do, then that's when the government steps in.

Congress is tackling the shortage issue as we speak. However, both parties still butt heads on something as simple as funding a baby formula shortage. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Our next post will have more journalistic elements because I want to share some new experiences with you all. Can't wait ;) !!

Doesn't really make sense that only a few companies would own so many others....also Pepsi owns Quaker. My childhood was a lie.
